The Makati Business Club was founded in October 1981, a period charac-terized by political and economic crisis brought about by a slowdown in the global economy and exacerbated by Ferdinand Marcos’ authoritarian rule. Cronies abounded and capital flight bled the ailing economy. Repression, rampant human rights abuses, curtailing of press freedom, and insurgen-cies pulled down the country.

To stem the nation’s decline, MBC served as the forum for constructive ideas to offer solutions to the crisis. In 1983, opposition leader Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr. returned to the country but was shot dead upon arrival.
President Marcos declared himself winner in the 1986 snap election marred
by widespread cheating and violence but Ninoy’s widow, Corazon “Cory”
Aquino, disputed the results. A peaceful uprising known worldwide as “People Power” revolution forced Marcos into exile and catapulted Cory to the presidency.
