2006 - No Charter Change

On its 25th year as the forum for constructive ideas, MBC continues to foster corporate social responsibility, good governance, and global competitiveness. For a brief period, MBC participated in LEDAC meetings. From the start, the Arroyo administration has been hounded by questions of legitimacy. A controversy spawned by alleged wiretapped recordings from the May 2004 polls led 8 Cabinet officials, former Pres. Aquino, and the MBC in calling for Pres. Arroyo to step down in mid-2005.

Twice defeating attempts at the House of Representatives to impeach her and alleged military plans to withdraw support from her, Pres. Arroyo advocated a national debate to amend the Constitution, shifting to a unicameral parliamentary system of government. MBC opposed charter change through people’s initiative or constituent assembly. Meanwhile, RVAT, OFW remittances, portfolio investments into the stock market, and ICT activities buoy up the economy as more Filipinos ironically experience hunger. Thus, public trust in the presidency remains weak, compounded by corruption scandals and human rights abuses.
