The Philippine-Malaysia Business
Council was launched on November 23, 1996 in Manila in the
presence of Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos and Malaysian
Prime Minister Dato' Seri Dr. Mahathir Mohamad during the
APEC Business Forum.
The Council is composed of senior business
executives from both countries and was established to
promote on a regular basis cooperation between the business
communities of the Philippines and Malaysia. The Council's
basic objectives are to identify and develop areas of
cooperation between both countries' private sectors;
to encourage and develop further investment in both
the Philippines and Malaysia; to encourage and develop
trade links between both countries; to encourage joint
exploration of business opportunities in third countries;
to identify business opportunities, in particular small-
and medium-sized enterprises; and to enhance networking,
contacts, and exchange of information between the private
sectors of both countries.
The Council is chaired
by MBC Chairman Ricardo J. Romulo for the Philippines
and Tan Sri Dato' Mohammed Basir, Chairman of the Malaysia
Banking Berhard, in Malaysia.
In year 2003, th PMBC has so far hosted
two important events. The first one was the 10
January 2003 mission headed by PMBC Chairman Tan
Sri Basir and the 24 February
2003 trade mission headed by Malaysian Trade Minister
Rafidah Aziz.
