Philippines-Singapore Business Council

8th Philippines-Singapore Business Council Meeting
29 September 2003, Hotel Inter-Continental, Singapore

Towards greater information sharing

The Philippine-Singapore Business Council and the International Enterprise Singapore (IE Singapore) jointly organized the 8th PSBC Meeting held at the Hotel Intercontinental in Singapore last September 29 with a half-day seminar entitled "The Philippines' Economic Outlook and Opportunities".

The conference drew in more than 100 Singaporean executives, joined by a 16-member delegation from the Philippines headed by PSBC Co-Chairman Guillermo Luchangco (Chairman & CEO, the ICCP Group). His counterpart from Singapore, PSBC Co-Chair Lim Chee Onn (Executive Chairman, Keppel Corporation) earlier hosted on Sunday night a welcome dinner for the Filipino executives.

Two speakers, one from the Philippines (Romeo Bernardo, a former finance undersecretary) and one from Singapore (Sailesh K. Jha of DBS Bank ) gave the keynote addresses during the plenary session. This was followed by well-attended breakout sessions featuring three promising sectors in the Philippines: Business Process Outsourcing which attracted the most number of participants, Logistics and Food & Lifestyle sectors. See line up of speakers and link to their presentations.

Many Singaporean delegates said they want to know more about the Philippines, citing that the council can help companies by addressing their information needs by providing updates and other information support. Politics and security in the Philippines also emerged as the top concerns among the delegates.

After the networking lunch which capped the half-day conference, the 8th PSBC Executive Committee meeting followed at the IE Singapore headquarters. Among those who represented the Philippine side were PSBC Execom members Guillermo Luchangco, Fernando Zobel de Ayala (Co-Vice Chair, Ayala Corp.) and Alfonso Yunchengco III (Partner, Argosy Advisers).

A key goal that emerged after the 8th PSBC meeting is to step up information sharing between the two countries. The Philippines would have its own section in IE Singapore's website (www.iesingapore.com), a site where countries such as Indonesia and China have their own country pages. Likewise, to widen the scope of information in on MBC sites www.mbc.com.ph and www.philippinebusiness.com.ph, links to other business-pertinent sites will be provided.

IE Singapore (formerly Trade Development Board), PSBC's counterpart in Singapore is Singapore's lead trade promotion agency with a primary mission to expand the presence of Singaporean companies all over the world.
