No. 56 - March 30, 2001
On 14 May, about 34 million registered voters will troop to the polling places to elect 13 Senators, their district and party-list representatives, and their local officials.

Seven of the 10 Senators, whose terms end on 30 June 2001, are running for re-election, namely: Franklin Drilon, Ramon Magsaysay Jr., Juan Flavier, Sergio Osmeña III, Miriam Defensor Santiago, Juan Ponce Enrile, and Gregorio Honasan. The three others: Anna Dominique Coseteng, Francisco Tatad, and Raul Roco, are disqualified because they are serving their second consecutive term as Senator. Recently, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appointed Sen. Roco as Education Secretary.

Twenty percent of the total membership of the House should be elected through the party list system. To qualify for a seat, a party should get at least 2% of the total votes cast. A party can submit a maximum of five nominees. Each party could get as many as three seats.

For the coming election, the COMELEC has kept the number of sectoral parties, organizations, and coalitions for the party-list to a manageable level. From 143 registrants, the COMELEC has granted only 56 marginalized sectors the chance to win a seat in the House. Below is the list of Senatorial and party-list candidates:
