| A survey among members of the Makati
Business Club reflected overwhelming support for a stronger
population and family planning program by government. In a survey
conducted by the Makati Business Club among its members over
a two-week period ending 5 December, 96% of members surveyed
said they were concerned about the size and rate of growth of
the Philippine population. The current population is 80 million
and is growing at a rate of 2.36% per year. Philippine population
is expected to hit 97 million by 2010.
Ninety
percent of businessmen surveyed felt that the large and fast-growing
population was a detriment to the economy. Ninety percent
also felt that the government, through the Department of Health,
should promote and make available all methods (natural and
artificial) of family planning and birth control to the public.
Moreover, 57% of executives covered in the survey said they
would vote for a candidate espousing natural and artificial
methods of family planning versus only 15% who said they would
vote for a candidate espousing natural methods of family planning
only. Almost 26% said a family planning stand would not make
any difference in their vote.
The results, part of a new Business Opinion Survey Series
(BOSS) conducted by the Makati Business Club, had 101 business
executives representing 12.8% of the membership. The surveys
will be conducted quarterly starting December 2002 covering
a range of social issues of concern to the business community.
Ninety percent of respondents were from top management and
over 70% were Filipino men.
