MBC statement of concern over the Court of Appeal’s decision on Banco Filipino
The Makati Business Club expresses its concern and outrage over the impact of the Court of Appeals recent order to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and the Monetary Board to reopen the Banco Filipino Savings and Mortgage Bank. Promulgated on 27 January 2012, the judgment threatens to undermine the power, granted to the central monetary authority by the Constitution, to supervise and regulate the banking industry. The decision appears to reward defiance of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, encourage undisciplined business practice, and, worst, permit abuse of depositors’ trust and misuse of the people’s money.
MBC statement on the impeachment process
18 January 2012 – The Makati Business Club wishes to make the following statements on the on-going Corona impeachment process:
1. MBC has been most supportive of and will continue to support the resolve of the Aquino Administration to tread the straight and narrow path of the “daang matuwid” and bring to justice those responsible for corruption, electoral fraud and human rights violations and end the impunity that characterized the previous administration.
MBC lauds the push for the passage of the freedom of informaton bill
13 January 2012 – The Makati Business Club applauds the pronouncement of Malacañang that President Benigno S. Aquino III has approved the Administration’s version of the freedom of information (FOI) bill. The measure guarantees the constitutional provisions on citizens’ right to information and the state policy of full public disclosure of all government transactions on matters of public concern.
MBC reiterates its strong stand against corruption
26 September 2011 – The Makati Business Club will never compromise its fundamental and unwavering opposition to corruption, be it in the public or private sectors. Over the past thirty years, we have consistently and steadfastly expressed very strong positions on issues of corruption, even at the cost of displeasing powerful vested interests. MBC remains resolute in this conviction.
We are reiterating this position in light of recent news reports that would make it appear that MBC has softened its stand against corruption.
Push electoral reforms now to protect votes in the future
18 August 2011 – Recent events—the resignation of Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri, the assumption to the Senate of Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III after winning his four-year-old electoral protest at the Senate Electoral Tribunal, the surfacing of former Commission on Elections provincial election supervisor Lintang Bedol and former Comelec commissioner Virgilio Garcillano—have brought electoral anomalies of the past back to the center of public attention, providing us an excellent opportunity to address unresolved electoral issues with an eye towards introducing and implementing reforms to protect votes in future elections.
An assessment of Year One of the Aquino administration
30 June 2011 – In order to make an objective assessment of the Aquino administration’s first year in office, we must begin with an appreciation of where we started off a year ago. Many of the urgent tasks that the new government had to immediately address had to do with repairing the damage and unraveling the entrenched anomalous systems that the highly corrupt Arroyo administration had left behind.
Year One was appropriately a year for laying the foundations for good governance and setting our fiscal house in order to ensure that future gains would be sustainable and on solid footing.
MBC opposes Marcos burial at the Libingan ng mga Bayani
19 May 2011 – House Resolution No. 1135, which urges the Aquino administration to let the Libingan ng mga Bayani be the final resting place of the former President Ferdinand Marcos, exemplifies historical revisionism at its deceitful worst in an attempt to recast the image of a disgraced leader.
Clarificatory statement on reports about a dialogue between the Makati Business Club and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front
13 May 2011 – The Makati Business Club (MBC) wishes to respond to recent media reports regarding a dialogue that allegedly took place between MBC and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF). We would like to publicly state that no such formal dialogue, with official representation from both MBC and the MILF, has taken place.
MBC applauds the appointment of Comelec Commissioner Augusto Lagman
27 April 2011 – The Makati Business Club applauds President Aquino’s appointment of Mr. Augusto “Gus” C. Lagman as Comelec commissioner. We receive his appointment as a very positive sign of the Aquino administration’s sincerity in pursuing reforms in our electoral systems and processes.
